Early Smoking: A Look Back
Many people are curious about how others start smoking, especially at a young age. My story might surprise you, considering how casual it all seemed back then.
Growing Up with a Smoking Parent
Living with a single mother who smoked more than my dad, I was exposed to cigarettes early on. By 11, I was secretly taking puffs from her packs behind the garage.
One evening, returning home from visiting grandparents, my mom (who was driving) asked me to pass her cigarettes. Instead of taking one herself, she casually asked me to light one for her because of the busy traffic.
A Turning Point: Shared Smoking
Hesitant but aware it was a test, I lit her cigarette. This seemingly simple act marked a turning point. My mom then surprised me further by offering me a cigarette. Nervous but excited, I took a puff, experiencing a strange mix of lightheadedness and novelty.
We smoked in silence for a while, the car filled with smoke. Other drivers noticed the unusual sight, but I reveled in the unexpected experience.
Open Communication, A Controversial Choice
My mom's next move was even more unexpected. She sent me into a shop to buy her cigarettes, clearly acknowledging my secret habit. When I returned, she offered me the last cigarette from her old pack and even a whole new pack!
Her reasoning? She disliked me sneaking smokes and preferred open communication. While her approach might raise eyebrows today, it resonated with me at the time.
A Habit Takes Root
Back home, the smoking continued. My mom offered me a cigarette after dinner, solidifying the newly established routine. That night, I even enjoyed a solo smoke before bed, my new pack a constant companion.
Smoking Throughout My Life
My mother's relaxed attitude towards my smoking continued throughout my teenage years. Friends flocked to our smoke-friendly house, a stark contrast to the usual hidden smoking spots.
Even today, two decades later, my relationship with smoking remains casual. I enjoy an occasional cigarette with my mother, but don't smoke excessively. However, I admit to a certain amusement when I see young people smoking in public, a feeling that perhaps stems from my own unconventional introduction to the habit.
This is My Story
This is my story of how I started smoking. While it may be unusual, it highlights the complexities surrounding this controversial habit. I'd love to hear your stories: How did you (or someone you know) start smoking?
